Thread: Hey Ricig, lend me your ears please.

Hybrid View

  1. Default Hey Ricig, lend me your ears please.

    Hi people

A little CW thought. When I was using the gt 10 I did not hear it, mind you tho I never did any recordings with the 10, just used it with a tube poweramp.

Ok to keep me entertained until I get my hands on the 100 I bought the br 80. I did a little recording with it via usb using stock presets and high gain. No post processing

Please tell me people if you can hear the CW cause if you do, I must be going deaf ;o) And you Ricig listen your a$$ off and tell me if you hear it.

    Thanks

Hey gummy these are my thoughts also, if this is the dreaded CW then I'm one of those who like that sound. Thanks for checking it out.

1:15 and 1:23, maybe others, but I'm one of those that likes it, so I'm not going to complain. Good work. -Rod-

Sounds good with my iPhone app! Love the tune

Are the drums from the BR80?

If yes they are better than the one in my Micro BR

    Thanks guys

Nope the drums are EZ drummer. I recorded with garageband and used the br as an audio interface. I was planning to use it for recordings but I don't like to flip back and forth through pages so I just used garageband.

I honestly hear only a bit of CW on one particular chord you play; but I'm not sure how to point out that oneout to you as it goes by rather quickly. I do hear quite a bit of fizz though...more like a wash of white noise in the presence range. But seriously, it's such a good little piece I shouldn't criticize any of it! Like others have already said, even if some CW is there, it sounds good!

Did you use the MS High Gain and/or the Recto Vintage preamp for the rhythms?

Hi Ricig and thanks for listening.

No I used the metalcat preset for left and right hard pan and put the modern high gain preset dead center The metalalcat is the metal lead preamp and the modern high gain is the rectifier vintage. For this particular track I lowered the gain on the metal lead patch from the stock 58 down to 55. Other than that these are unaltered patches.

I found the metal lead on it's own to be thin and buzzy sounding especially when panned hard. The recto IMHO adds a nice bark to the overall sound. Though I'm no fan of the recto sound on it's own. I've had a couple of recto's and never bonded with them. Some have on the other hand got good results with those amps.

I know what you are talking about when you say fizz. But I think with added instruments, vocals and some mixing it will disappear.

But one thing I noticed was that each on it's own they don't sound very good, rather thin and buzzy. So I tried to analyse in my head what was missing and what was to much of as I listened to them separatly. I started with just the metal lead, recorded a part and rather than eq-ing it to death I chose the layering method.

These patches sound immensly better through the roland cube 40 xl via the aux input. But I'm still pretty happy with the sound and when I finish playing bass and get some vocals and mixing done I'll post the finished product. I think that will be the ultimate test, how these patches sound when they have to play with bass and vocals.

I think it's equally important to be creative in recording methods as in songwriting. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Gilmore, Metallica master of puppets era didn't have the tools we are offered today but still managed to make amazing sounding records. All they had was their ears and a clever engineer. That is ultimately what counts in recording. And I think that is what we today have to use, our ears and be creative. There are no rules to this I think, new stuff and new methods are born from unorthodox problem solving.

Hey guys - I know this is off topic, but you have my interest peaked on the BR-80. Can it be used as a makeshift effects processor in a pinch? In other words, I'm going to a gig and don't want to bring anything with me other than my guitar and BR. Can it be plugged into an amp or returns and used for the effects? What mode would it be in (MTR/eBand/etc), and is there an output select option? I realise it would be cumbersome to change patches, but if it CAN work this way, I might just pick one up to try.

Given that I still have and love my GSP1101, I'm thinking that maybe I don't need another floor processor. What I really want is something I can use to drive my MicroCube, provide a practice environment and something I can drag to a last minute jam if I don't want to bring my GSP/CTRL2. Would the BR-80 do this?

I see no reason why you couldn't. More info here
