Thread: Digital out for recording

    Question Digital out for recording

has anyone succesfully used the digital out (sp/dif) for recording? i would be interested in knowing what the results were like....

i have used it some, i was excited to utilize it until i found that even maxed, the output level is really low. i have to boost my recording inputs very high and frankly, it doesn't seem worth it when you can use the xlr/ balanced outs.

Except for the fact that its an exact representation of the sound of the GT.

Because there is not another A/D-D/A conversion. Now if your running an analog setup you wont have an issue anyway. but whats the point of converting a digital signal to analog and then back to digital that just equals tone degradation. but thats all perspective anyway. i only use my SPDIF because i record in the digital realm and i get tons of compliments on my tone.

I heartily agree with Amenity. You convert AD once and get data to DAW digitally. If your digital levels ain't right then something else is wrong (perhaps patch output is too weak at the point in the chain were you have set the "DGT" icon?). Check your sys setting for DGT. I've never had issue with 100%. Check your DAC to see if there is a control that is attenuating the S/PDIF inputs and if so, adjust. At 24 bits, there is no need to max the meters anyhow. -12 dBu is good place to start. Hope this helps.

I know this is quite an old thread but didn't someone post something about the digital outs not being 24 bits in reality? May have only been with the GT-8.
