Internally they are pretty much the same thing, the Pro just has more effects loops, USB direct recording/editing, etc. The floor board designed to work with the Pro is Roland's FC-200, but any MIDI foot controller will work

Hi HollowSoul, It's a pleasure to see you at this quiet corner of the forum :D
The sound of the GT-Pro is identical to the GT-8. Some of the added features of the Gt-pro are:
- USB audio in/out.
- More output options.
- 12 assigns per patch.
- Software editor.
- 2 amp control jacks.
- 3 FX loops: 1 mono (fixed) 1 stereo (assignable)
- Sitar, and other new FX (I don't remember exactly)
- Nane button.
The rest is similar to the GT-8, including the foot controler.
I hope it helps. Keep asking whatever you need.
Cheers,
Manuel

Thanx....
a few more Q's that i hope come out positive...
#1 can i transfer custom patches from the 8 to the PRO???
#2 does the FC-200 have a sub exp for wah??
#3 with the PRO, how many fx can i engage at 1 time?? (with the 8 it was only 3..fx1-fx2-and sup exp
and WAY!!! of topic..
I'm also running a Roland GR-20 into the RETURN on my Mesa triple rec head while the GT8 is ran into the normal input on the Mesa, can this same hookup be accomplished?? i noticed on the pdf download that there are 2 seperate inputs on the Pro but it also said that one is cancelled when using the other?????
and even WAY'R off topic...
if i decide to go with the pro.....i would like to find a road case that it "the Pro", my Triple rec head, and a BBE sonic maximizer would fit nicely in....
any ideas??

I can answer #1: In theory GT-Librarian can translate patches to and from GT-8 but it does not work with 95% of the sys files posted at the GT-8 fourm. BUT it will work as far as you keep the GT-8:
1.- Upload the files from GT-8 at GT-Librarian.
2.- Save the files collection as a gtl (gt librarian) file
3.- That files now can be used at GT-Pro
That's the way that Seismic did kindly converted all the Gt-8 patches that I own (they're posted at http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/GTPro/)

About #3 I believe it's the same as the GT-8.
You can connect the stereo output of the GR-20 at the Stereo FX return of the GT-Pro. That would be a nice way to mix the two signals. And as you can assign the Return FX at any place of the FX chain, you can even share some FX (like reverb, modulation or delay) with the normal guitar and midi guitar

That's the signal path I'm using at this moment:
Audio Path:
Guitar normal Out > GT-Pro In
Gt-Pro Mono Loop Send > Eternity Love Pedal Overdrive > Gt-Pro Mono Loop Return.
Gt-Pro Stereo Loop Send > Eventide Eclipse > Gt-Pro Stereo Loop Return.
Gt-Pro Direct/Tuner Out > Clavia Nord Modular Audio Input n.1 (*)
Roland GK2a Hex Pickup > GKP4 Splitter
GKP4 Out 1 > VG8 Input
GKP4 Out 2 > Axon AX100-MKII In
GT-Pro Stereo Out > Roland KC-350 Input 1
VG-8 Stereo Out > Roland KC-350 Input 2
Clavia Nord Modular Stereo Out > Roland KC-350 Input 3
Roland KC-350 Stereo Mixed Out > P.A.
Midi Path
VG8-Out > GT-Pro In
Gt-Pro Thru > Eventide Eclipse In
Eventide Eclipse Thru > Axon AX100-MKII In
Axon AX100-MKII Out > Clavia Nord Modular In
Roland EV5 Expresion Pedal > VG-8 (Assigned to CC#38 )
Boss FS-5U Pedal > Axon AX100-MKII Sustain Input
(*) I'm using the guitar signal to modulate the ADSR envelope of the synth and get a more "guitar-like" sound from the lead synth sounds.
My favourite game:
1 - Play a chord with a nice pad from the Clavia Nord Modular
2 - Press the Sustain pedal to hold the pad
3 - Play a melody with the normal guitar over the chord
4 - Change the chord in a progression and go back to #1.
That's an endless enjoyment! :P :P You can also do it with the GR20
I see that you're using a couple of EON15. They're very good! I've got them on the past, but now I feel too old to carry them so I changed to a Roland KC350.
> 12 assigns per patch.
The gt-8 doesn't have 12.... ???
About that fretless bass patch -- do you use a real bass, or just the pitch shifter to transpose -1 octave?
I'd also like to hear these files, but it says "not found" ---
: This is the sound of the real JMP-1 together with the GT-Pro:
: Real JMP1 + GT-Pro: mp3 file (836 kB)
: This is the sound of the GT-Pro simulating the JMP-1:
: GT-Pro alone: mp3 file (813 kB)
Can you re-post those files? I can host them on my web server if you want.

It's normal guitar with -1 pitch shifter.
Let me search for that lost files... :?

Hollow,
converting your GT8 patches to the pro is easy as long as you still have the GT8..... if you dont then you will have to get someone with an 8 (and GT-Librarian) to do it for you.
It's pretty quick and painless - let me know if you need a hand :)

Well, you've gotten some great input; please let us know how things develop. I'd like to weigh in.....
First, I'd like to take each of these points and play off of them:
- USB audio in/out.
IMHO, this is great for using the editor and the librarian, as you'd expect, but I've recently moved away from using the digital audio over it. The Pro can process USB input, which sounds nifty, but I've yet to experiment with that. For me, SPDIF wins -- and the 8 also has that....
- More output options.
'Nuff said, I s'pose; I LOVE having the SUB out: My "amp" (PowerEngine 60) stays permanently connected to Sub, and Main is for the computer. Good stuff, esp. since you can vary the EQ of each....
- 12 assigns per patch.
(Personally, I don't know why 8 isn't enough!)
- Software editor.
Very good stuff; while I'm thankful I can tweak thru the Pro directly, the editor is far and away where I do everything. But, the 8 has community developed software that probly mitigates this advantage.
- 2 amp control jacks.
Very nice, if you need them....
- 3 FX loops: 1 mono (fixed) 1 stereo (assignable)
Nice if you need them; I have a tech21 Tri-AC parked in one loop.
- Sitar, and other new FX (I don't remember exactly)
Not true; just checked the 8's manual and the Sitar is there -- I don't think there's any difference at all in the preamps, effects, etc.
- Nane button.
The mis-spelled "Name" button is an exclusive feature for only a select few of us!!
I have a friend who has the 8, and is very happy with it. I sorta prefer the "feel" of my Pro plus FC-200, but these are subjective things. (I could never tolerate tweaking directly on the 8....) Comparing the two, with the FC-200 in the equation, the Pro does give you more controls and is very flexible in terms of assignments. Also, Boss did a good job of integrating the two . However, the -200's expression pedal doesn't have the integrated on/off switch of the 8, which I suppose could be a deal-breaker for some.... I think it's possible the -200 could cut down on the tap-dancing, perhaps by setting it up so that you simply hit one pedal (tied to multiple assigns) at each point in a given song....
My recommendation? As I've said before on this forum, the Pro's value proposition for most people just isn't there -- it just costs too much relative to the 8. However, I've grown very fond of the Pro/FC-200, and would have to say that if money isn't an issue, then the Pro wins easily.
Oh, the -200 is still pretty pricey ($320 at MF), so factor that in before you leap -- as others have mentioned, there are lower-cost alternatives....
Finally, regarding the "puke factor" -- yeah, you'll the rackmount puts the dear expensive bits outta range (and presumably behind you), but the -200's price doesn't make it disposable. Maybe a pedal-board full of FS-6s and the like would work! :D
and even WAY'R off topic...

I'm in the same position as you HollowSoul. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on getting a Pro. I plan on keeping the GT8 to use it just as a foot controller though. For what I could get for it on a private, I could just about buy an FC200. I don't need 10 patch pedals nor do I need more than 1 EXP pedal right. I do want to keep the EXP Switch and the integral CTL pedal to the GT8 has everything I need footswitch wise. Plus, I still have something I can more easily carry around compared to a 6 space rack. I even have a spare GT8 AC adaptor so I can just unplug all the connections from the GT8, throw it in the official GT Central Carry Bag and I'm good to go.
I want the Pro for the stereo loop so I can run 2 HCs (already have 1) to get the maximum use from the Dual Preamps. Either that or I will use one loop for an HC and the other for my ADA MicroCab (it's got some sounds I really like). The Pro will also simplify my set-up by reducing the cables running everywhere to external gear. Eventually I plan on getting a TC Electronics G-Force for effects and the Pro will run it's SPDIF out to the TC.
