I'll be needing to use the GT-Pro in a live performance situation.
I have a power amp, but does anyone have recommendations for a speaker setup that would be a good match?

Hi 3G,

What poweramp do you have? And what music/venues/crowds are you playing?

I have used the Pro for live performances on several occasions, in combination with a mesa 50/50 and either a marshall 4x12 or 2 custom 1x12 cabinets.

Give me some more info and I might be able to provide with some tips. Also, read the GT-8 forum since that's were most of the info is stored 8)

Hi there - thanks for the reply.

I anticipate, but can't say for sure, the majority of work will be in smaller situations (100-400 capacity).

I'm hoping to find some casuals around here unless I luck into a great situation. I've played pop/rock/"classic"/funk/dance/ballads/standards/country - although there are so many bloody "genre" titles being used now that I'm not sure what's what anymore!

At any rate, it would tend to be more melodically oriented, which means (to me) whether doing a sustained, gutsy lead or a rhythm sound, all the notes should be discernable. If that makes any sense...

I have a couple of power amps I was planning on trying: a Yamaha P2150 and a Hafler P3000 - both of which are somewhat dated, but still work fine.

I'm figuring that because the sound from the GT-Pro is great coming out of it, I want as little additional coloration as possible.

I've had Mesa Boogies and Fender amps in the past, so I don't know what I'd sound like using a Marshall. I tend to relate Marshall stacks with over-the-top loud headbanging music, but I'm sure that's an overly simplified stereotype.

I would also tend to think that two smaller cabs would be better than one since the Pro is stereo. A salesman suggested some Behringer 4-12 cab that has angled speakers for a "stereo" effect.

...???

That's what I play, mostly.

Eeeh... you'll be needing quite some sounds? I play some pop/rock covers, so I have some sounds that work well in that area.

Yes, it does. Stay low on the gain, then, maximum 50 or so. The higher gain amp models (mesa etc) can rock perfectly at these gain settings without loss of single note definition.

For me, the hardest sound to obtain is an overdrive with just the right combination of drive and definition. I am unsure as yet whether to use mid-gain amp model or a clean amp model combined with an overdrive pedal model. Try both options to see what works best for you.

These are full range amps, no? For good full range speakers, ask at the GT-8 forum.

I personally like the combination of the Pro with the Mesa 50/50 very much. The 6L6 tubes add much less color to the sound than the EL84/34 marshall tubes. A high-end quality for sure, but also the urge and presence of tube power amps.

As for the cabinets, both have Celestion speakers. The differen lies indeed in the stereo separation (single cabs) and low end (4x12).

Hope you can use some of this. BTW, I use the stack amp setting for the outputs, so no speaker sims. Since I tweak my sounds at home, for the overdrive and distortion sounds I usually set a 4x12/Dyn57 speaker/mic combination as speaker simulation.
