View Full Version : GT-Pro Software! (GT8 <> GTPro conversion)

I'm enjoying editing patches with the GT-PRO Editor! It's really easy and helpful.

The GT-PRO librarian will give us a close friendship with the GT-8, GT-6 and GS-10 users. This is what the GT-PRO Librarian Manual says:

GT-PRO Librarian is an application that allows you to manage your GT-PRO/GT-8 User patches efficiently as a library on your computer.

Imports GT-6 patches, bulk dumped using sequencer software and saved as SMF files, and converts them to GT-PRO or GT-8 patches.

You can import GS-10 User patches and convert and use them as GT-PRO or GT-8 patches.

You can use GT-PRO Librarian to manage GT-PRO and GT-8 User patches.

When using either the GT-PRO or GT-8, you can convert patches from GT-PRO to GT-8 format or vice versa by changing the Target Model setting.

That's great! :P

Now I've got one question:

Since the GT-Pro Editor/Librarian do not save /open sysex files (only SMF). How can we convert the sys files to midi files?

I've tried the following so far, but it does not work:

-From Sonar Sysx View, open the sys file and select the “Auto Send Bank” option
-Save the file as midi file.
-Import the midi file from the GT-PRO librarian, but nothing happens.

I will appreciate some help :)
Thank you,

Manuel

This is the cute tuner integrated at the Editor.
I think that the precision is one step higher than the one at the Gt-Pro screen. When the spot of the GT screen is centered, you can still adjust the neddle one extra step above and below the center

yeah, I'm waiting for a gt-8 <-> gt-pro patch-converting-program, too.

EDIT:
Are you using a keyboard-amp or a PA? I saw both of the output-selections are set to "line/phones". What about your sound?

Manuel, you're dead on! I was considering this option myself. I seem to recall that the Librarian was available form the Boss website, so GT-8 users could download it. Then it's going to be easy exchanging patches.

For those GT-8'rs in possession of the software, I can try and export SMF files of my patches with the GT-8 as target model, anyone interested (Seismic?) ?

Yep. I'm a line man. Sometimes it's funny to feel the air moving in front of a real amp, but amps can produce serious back injuries when you carry them, and your neighbours will try to poison your milk after a practice or recording session at home. Why to play with just one amp/speaker when we can have all the different amp/speakers we want from COSM?
At the final result of a mix, or at the sound coming from the PA, the audience can not hear the difference in between a real or a sim amp. You only feel it as a player when you jam with other amp-mad guitarist.

I'm still trying this way. Some sys work when converted to mid and others don't. I don't know why

This one works:

Van Halen 1.syx (http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/Varios/Van%20Halen%201.syx)
Van Halen 1.mid (http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/Varios/Van%20Halen%201.mid)

This one does not work:

stillgotblues.syx (http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/Varios/stillgotblues.syx)
stillgotblues.mid (http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/Varios/stillgotblues.mid)

When I import Van Halen 1 with the GT-Pro library, it always goes to patch number 1-5, and when I import stillgotblues.mid it doesn't go anywhere. :?:

I'm not sure whether that would work: You have to do a global search / replace, instead of just the first occurrence....

I have only seen the two mid's that are posted above and I don't know how much there has already been artificially modified. And I do not know on what Bank/Patch they were sited.

Seismic had asked a while ago for the GT-Pro implementation, but we still haven't got anything from you Pro-guys. Please try to post/pm that.

aerial is right, you need to replace that in every Syx packet inside the SMF. Also place a 0x00 between all (0xf7 0xf0) pairs.
Now to the real "header": That is the one before this first Syx-state(0xf0).You can try to copy-paste it from another smf you got, but I do not know what it does to your GT-Pro and how it changes when you select another Bank/Patch site. My guess is that it corresponds to the addresses wich are also encoded into every Syx package.

And last not least, for every Syx package that you edit manually you might need to recalculate the checksum. The Pro might be somewhat stricter in requiring the correct checksum than the GT8.

I could write two litte compilers (pro<-->gt8) but without the MIDI implementation and the editor this will be very hard.....

Good Luck guys

Thank you fubb.
I am sorry, I misformulated it in my original post:
I meant the GT-Pro editor that can be seen in the screenshots above.
I only found the GS-10 editor, which seems to differ quite a bit.
Thank you anyway for your quick response and I hope we can solve that, cause it might be of interest for both communities.

Not really, and I've done a lot of MIDI programming in the past, so I think I should know. (I wrote my own editor in Java for the GX-700.)

Mr.Sleepy, in fact, has already figured out most if not all of this. I think the basic idea is just using the correct model ID number -- we already know these values for both devices -- and factoring in the differences in the Assign section.

Also, Roland support can now get the MIDI Implementation spec for the Pro; a few weeks ago, they were willing to mail a printed copy to me but I decided to wait for the electronic PDF version.....

Oh, and one other thought: It would've been nice if the GT community had a sense for the Pro and the 8 before they came out, because I think we should've "standardized" on the Pro's .syx (since it's a proper superset of the 8) and then let PC software swizzle things for the target device. In other words, all patch files would really be for the Pro, but the software would let you specify the 8 as the target device and would simply correct the modelID used by the patch. I could be very wrong, but I don't think any other changes would be required to a Pro patch before sending to the 8....

Hi aerial, thanks for your tips.
That's too bad, you did not request the print version. But maybe you can even tell me without it, what the header stands for:
4D 54 68 64 00 00 00 06 00 00 00 01 03 C0 4D 54 72 6B 00 00 04 65 00 FF 02 14 43 6F 70 79 72 69 67 68 74 20 A9 20 32 30 30 34 20 62 79 20 00 FF 01 06 50 65 6C 75 73 6F 00

It is from the van halen smf. This MIDI chunk gets sent just before the first 0x70, so it is not system-exclusive.
Does it maybe change the selected patch or anything similar to make the GT-pro update its display ?

When I look at it with a binary reader it says something like "[...]Copyright 2004 by Peluso[...]"

Very strange....

Oh and here is the end of the smf, after the last 0x7f is sent:
00 FF 58 04 04 02 18 08 00 FF 59 02 00 00 00 FF 51 03 09 27 C0 00 FF 2F 00

What about that one ?!

Can you tell me more about the address space of the GT-Pro ?
where is the first user patch(address)?
where is the last userpatch(address)?
how many userpatch places are there?
is is possible that users have posted preset patch smf exports, which would complicate the analysis of the given addresses ?

I am sure there will be more questions, but since you wrote that you are firm with midi and since Mr Sleepy does not have a Pro, I think you Pro guys could help him out. He already helped me with many things , most recently with the math behind parametric EQs. So please everybody don't always say "ask Mr Sleepy". That poor guy is doing enough already !

I am glad, aerial, that I have someone else I can also ask from now on.
Looking forward to good teamwork, Dennis

Peluso is my cat, and I use his name as the user of my computer. Maybe that's why his name is there: because I did open the sys file with Sonar and then save it as midi file.

Peluso is also my guitar teacher:

wooohaa  ,
that's so cute !
In the IT business one must do a lot of boring decoding.
The deciphered result has never been something as cute as that little "hair ball".
And the photo, just perfect ! :D

You might complain about our GT8 subset but at least we do not include your credit card numbers and stuff
(... just kidding aerial7, I know what you mean)

Please create a patch with the GT-Pro editor for target patch position 1-1.
Give that patch a meaningful patchname(not the file's name, but the patch's name itself: the "name" that gets displayed on the GT-Pro display! )
Save that patch.
After that send that patch to the follwing positions:

to user patch 1-1
to user patch 1-4
to user patch 2-1(I assume that Gt-Pro also has banks of 4 patches each ?!)
and to whatever last user patch number there is on GT8.

From the GtPro save these patches back to your PC.
Send me the patches please as raw as possible as they arrive in the librarian. Do not open and save them in any thirdparty editor.

So all should be of the same patch parameter settings, but from different patch positions. Don't forget to organize them as you save them so you can tell me which one came from which patch position.

I must warn you: I do not want you to help me if you cannot profit from it. So please consider: My solution will be written in Microsoft .Net for Windows XP / 2k.If you have another operating system, it won't be of any use to you.
(well still someone else might translate the patches for you on a windows machine).

¡Good luck y recuerdos al peludo ese peligro!

Here is the file: GT-Pro Patches (http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/GTPro/4edernity.zip)

The GT-Pro has 400 presets divided in 40 banks of 10 presets each one.

The first 200 are the User Patches (from 1-1 to 20-10). Factory presets go from 21-1 to 40-10

I’ve created a patch called INIT (it’s a blank initial preset) at 1-1 and copy to 2-1, 3-1, 4-1…20-1. I’ve saved every individual patch, and also a midi file containing all 200 user patches.

I Hope it helps :) Please, let me know if you need something else.

Regards,

Manuel

Chiuu, so you got a little more  patch places than we do on the GT8.

I hope you still have that INIT patch, because in this case I need the two INIT patches from position 1-10 and 40-10, too.

As a first step I will strip off any data correlated to ASSIGNS. You could use my text export if some ASSIGNS turn out to be crucial for using the patch and then set the Assigns manually for the Pro accordingly. In the future we can go into more detail on the ASSIGN issue.

Thanks Manuel !

I assume you mean the last user positin 20-10 (40-10 is a factory preset)
Here they are (http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/GTPro/4edernity.zip) (I've overwritten the old file)

I think the conversion from GT-Pro to GT-8 is inmediate, since we save the GT-Pro files in midi format, you just have to open it with the librarian and select GT-8 as Target.

Hi Seismic,
You don't have to download the entire patch list if you use GT-Librarian. On the left side of every patch there are 2 small buttons: Temporary Read / Write. The Temporary write function will write the patch at the temporary area of the GT-Pro (it doesn't matter what patch you've selected at that moment). If you defenitively want to save that patch at the GT, you have to use the Write button of the GT and choose the position to store it.

It works for me but, in case of trouble, everything can be fixed again with a simple factory reset

¡Adeú pingfloyd !,

Just wanted to let you know that I have not forgotten the conversion task.

It's just, that I had a few other problems those past days in the GT8 forum.

So here you can have a look at the progress, if you are really really nervous about getting it.

But as said, it is not finished yet, so no use for you.

On the Midi setup screen you don'T have anything to select.
Just open the Librarian. There, load a syx file(GT8) into the PC Archive.
Then right-click a patch from the tree and select "export to GtPro..."

Or, if the syx files show the Icon of my software, that means, no other software has registered *syx as its proprietary format before. So you could just double-click any syx file. Then, on the Midi Setup screen click librarian again : the syx file will be automatically loaded into the PC Archive tree.

here is the link to the download:
x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x (deprecated)

I'll try to have it fully working by the end of the week.

cu Dennis

Edit -------- - - - - -
There are two requirements for my software:
DirectX and MsDotNet
I hope I'll have the requirement for DirectX
already removed for the coming roll-out.
But you definately _will_ need MsDotNet.

Hi Pro-guys, took me a while to understand SMF.
All those utility functions one needs for VarLength calculation and stuff...
...ugly.
Anyway: with this new version you can right-click onto patches in the "PC Archive" and "export them to GT-Pro..." , just as in the previous post described.

The patches are saved to SMF format (*.mid), BUT still have the GT8 content. So you need to import them into the GT-Pro Librarian and do the final transformation there !

So basically right now my app can do for you what you had to do before on the command line with the "SyxToMid.exe" tool, that pingfloyd had posted. (This tool helped actually a lot to test for errors in my syx-to-mid transformation.)

Here the links: deactivate your download manager and LEFT-click the link. The fact that it shows a "....*.zip" in the link does not mean, it is a direct link to a file. Your browser is joking here.

Thank you very much for your work!! The option to convert the sysex files to smf is working perfectly. :D

The problem is at the GT-Librarian: it doesn't open 90% of the SMF files converted from a GT-8 sys file. I've converted most of the "german patches" to SMF, but GT-Librarian does not open that files, so they can't be downloaded at the GT-Pro.

I've noticed that the software that comes at the GT-Pro CD-ROM has been developed by Opcode Systems Inc. That proves that nobody from Boss is reading this forums, otherwise they would have contracted Mr. Sleepy and Dr. Edernity to develope the software for the GT's. 8)

That story isn't finished yet !

could you provide me with 2 lists,
one with the patches that work
the other with the patches that don't work.

I know, I could do this on my own, but here is a point I think where I could get a little support from you Pro guys, considering that it is of absolutely no purpose to me .

OK, there is one big intention:
I want you guys to profit from our GT8 patches and feel motivated to post your Pro patches for us. Thats the Christian spirit !

The way you have worked on your marshal study I am convinced that there are a couple of modelers in the Pro community that we could need.

so please help me in uniting the two patch worlds.
(Also, after that I will try to convert from Line6 and Digitech...)

Edit:
I know, you cannot just copy the parameters from a line6 by value and have the same sound on the GT-x.
But if you have ever wondered why I stress so much on tables instead of knobs and other graphical controls: that's the reason ! Cause for tables you can define additional transformation tables. (well, I am not telling you any further... 8) )

edernity

did you use Sleepy's single patch splits or the original
"SoundsDerHelden"?

Cause the original is already in SMF ! So you wouldn't need my syx-to-smf conversion for that particular patch collection at all !

There is a GT8 SMF

and a GS10 Lib File.

You can import both formats directly into Librarian.

We've got it!

Thanks to Mr. Sleepy's Editor :D :D :D we can download GT-8 patches to the GT-Pro

If you click at the bottom of the 8 of the GT-8 logo you'll have a GT-Pro mode that allows to download patches at the GT-Pro. He's still experimenting with this, but some features are working.

So, here are all my patches, including all the GT-8 patches I've collected so far.

GT-8 patches go from n.10-6 (96) to 18-2 (172)

http://www.lohengrinaudio.com/GTPro/

The gtl file is at the bottom of the page

I think that we should make good use of the GT-Librarian to share all our patches and keep them ordered. So if you add more patches to that list, just send it to me and I'll keep it updated (I'll order the patches when I've got some spare time)

Thanks again Mr Sleepy :D
