ok, so i've trawled the various roland sites, google'd till the cows came home, so I thought I'd try the obvious route....
do any of you Pro guys have the midi implementation document for the gt pro? or know where it can be found?
the GT8 version is freely available, but for us humble 8 user's, we need the pro version so we can convert (steal?) some of your .mid patches into .syx files. And I can't find it.....
I guess the reverse would also be true? with the correct document the .syx files should become available to pro users? 8)
Anywho, your help would be greatly received and rewarded with the promise of an afterlife populated by nubile temptresses etc etc etc
cheers

Just two days ago I asked Roland for this; they claimed they were trying to get the PDF for me (and offered to send me a printed hardcopy but I didn't take them up on that).
However, for the purpose you describe, I don't think that's warranted. First of all, for many reasons, the Pro community just isn't cranking out patches (and they wouldn't be all that Pro-specific anyway). Secondly, making the 8's patches work with the Pro has already been explored: Ask Mr.Sleepy about it. Also, look for my other posts on this subject. (Basically, just editing the .syx to change the model ID is all that's required in many cases: as I recall, the 8's model id was "08" and the Pro's was "0B" but I could be wrong--the details are in my other posts.)
Of course, the Pro's MIDI spec is still interesting and I want to get it as soon as I can.....
For what it's worth, the biggest diff seems to be in the assign section....but I don't know that would be a big deal. Most MIDI hardware is pretty good at tossing stuff it doesn't understand, so I'm not sure an 8 would be at all fazed by seeing the extra assign data. (That data would just be associated with an address the 8 doesn't think is meaningful.) In other words, GT software could and maybe should just standardize on the Pro's .syx format, and only swizzle model IDs depending on the device it's talking to at the moment.....

I take your point, however this specific request came about from the posting of a desirable pro patch in the Gt8 Patch forum (Satriani - Why - posted by petracci) and the possibility of more to come. They may not be 'pro specific' but they are.mid format.
If mr sleepy has the gt-8 -> Pro route sorted then thats great.
Would you mind posting / emailing the pdf file if and when you lay your hands on it?
thanks
