I pre-ordered mine from musiciansbuy.com (http://www.musiciansbuy.com/) back at the end of January and was told a mid-march delivery. I was guessing that was optimistic since products rarely ever seem to make their target dates, so I am assuming I won't see it till April, either.
But, like you... I can't wait to get it. I have the space clear in my rack just waiting for it!

I pre-ordered around the same time; I'm a little hopeful I'll also see mine around mid-March. One of the online retailer's has been saying for awhile now something like "very limited quantities" late March -- so it sounds like an initial wave will go out around then.
To pass the time I'm re-discovering my long-neglected first guitar. It's got a Floyd Rose that needs some attention, and it's been good finally learning how to take care of an FR. I think I've now tweaked just about every allen screw on the thing. 8O I've replaced the trem springs and now I'm fixing the intonation. Amazing how much more I enjoy playing it than my "real" guitar. Having drifted towards keys lately, this is pulling me back into guitar, and the impending arrival of the GT-Pro is just more motivation.....

Just about mid-March now, so I thought I'd ask if you'd heard anything. I figure if you had you'd have said something unless you already got it and are too distracted to tell us. 8O

Boy wouldn't that be nice! Like I said, my auth. Roland dealer called Roland up down in L.A., CA on Feb 24th; and the official word is April. Mid-April. They did NOT give any reasons why.
Sounds like they may be having some production issues or something, as they have bumped the release date fwd. one month... we'll see, huh?

03-15-2005, 07:48 PM
Well, I just asked about my pre-order, and was told they still expect to ship in late March and that I would be in the first batch going out. So, I'm still vaguely hopeful that having pre-ordered so "early" I got into the first wave going out. Perhaps it'll be April before Boss has sufficient production for widespread availability, that the first batch is in effect sold out?
Not that I care -- all I can do is wait.

Actually, they've changed that in the last day or so -- whereas it used to talk about shipping in very limited quantities at the end of March, it doesn't say anything at all. In fact, having removed that statement altogether, it almost implies they've got it in stock.

Well, I've waited this long... I suppose one more month won't hurt me.
aerial7
03-16-2005, 07:43 PM
Oh well, all we can do is wait. It does make me wonder whether the place from which I pre-ordered knows what's going on: I mean, either they just KNOW they're getting my pre-order in the next week or two, or they are out of touch with Roland. Probly the latter.
It does give me time to get acquainted with my new Power Engine 60, which arrived today. Of course, with just 4 "variables" involved (EQ plus level), it just sorta works as-is.....
Not that it'll make a difference, but if you have pre-ordered a Pro, please consider politely pointing out to Roland that a PDF of the manual would help us endure the wait, at zero cost to Roland.
I just hope they're not waiting on the software! Or maybe they'e still trying to decide whether the effects loop(s) are stereo! 8O (Yeah, I've seen the pics of the back of the unit -- I'm holding out hope they're TRS.....)

Librarian will work for us GT-8'ers to start sharing patches other than the archaic way. And the sooner the GT-Pro editor is out, the sooner some one out there can make it work with the GT-8.

Accroding to the Japanese Q&A on the GT-Pro (you hvae to translate it unless you know Japanese), you can convert GT-6 and GS-10 patches with the GT-Pro software.

What timing! I was just finding myself about to crack and and just get the -8. I mean, what exactly am I waiting for? I could save about $350, plus I could sell my FC-200 for what, $100 or more, so what the heck am I doing? Cripes, for that kinda dough I could get my 2nd Power Engine 60, and still have some real beer money.
Not to mention the serious brownie points I'd get from the wife after 'splaining that I "saved" some money while simplifying my rig.
I dunno, somebody help me out here, but I'm losing the faith. The -8 would be more portable (since I'd have to de-rack the Pro if I wanna sport it somewhere OR create a travel rack or something). The biggest advantage is that I'd rather have the thing at eye-level when tweaking, and the -8 makes that more challenging. Don't get me wrong -- I still prefer rackmounts to floormounts, but these delays have given me too much time to think about the economics involved WHILE endangering my need for instant gratification. I can't wait any longer!
Perhaps this suggests my worst fear may be true: They're waiting on the software. Dumb, dumb, dumb. They should ship the units as fast as they can make 'em and provide other post-sales distribution for the software.
The lack of a manual so far also makes me sceptical they're done; sure, they could be holding it, but given the higher margins the Pro undoubtedly has, I'm sure they'd want to sell as many of those as possible. Perhaps the manual would make it all too clear there's no real compelling reason to pay 1.8x more for the Pro....
Well, I've waited almost 10 years, I can wait some more. But every day -- every delay -- makes me look harder at the -8....

04-04-2005, 06:56 PM
Try and be patient, I know I'm chompin' at the bit too.
I have both the GX-700 & GT-5. I got the GT-5 to simplify my rig from the GX-700. Even though the GT-5 was a newer unit & had newer effects I still kept going back to the GX-700 because I prefer that format so much more over the pedal unit. I don't know why, just prefer it that way.
aerial7
04-04-2005, 11:20 PM
Thanks, rcknrllmn, but I'm afraid sometime over the next MONTH I will find the time to do a comparison of the two....
We can assume the internals -- the effects -- are identical. So it comes down to the front-and rear-panels, plus the software.
If I can distill it down into a concise, coherent, comparison, I'll try to post something....

Ive been debating the GT8 v GTPro and am still undecided, and Boss sure arent helping the cause by taking so damn long to bring it out, or the even just the manual
GT Pro : 4 COSM engines. Rack mounted. Called Pro.
GT8 : Out now. Half the price. Comes with the pedals you need. Did I mention it's half the price and already out?
VB
aerial7
04-05-2005, 09:03 AM
VB, you're being overly generous with the Pro  Like the 8, it's dual-COSM. So far, the only known internal difference is more patch space on the Pro (200 user vs. 140).
I'm beginning to think Boss shoulda released the Pro 3-5 months ahead of the 8, in order to sell as many of the higher-margin units to those who couldn't wait for the 8.
Still working on my analysis, however, so far it seems like the 8 overlaps the Pro enough that any relative shortcomings are acceptable, esp. given the difference in price. In particular, I think when you look at each in terms of applications -- how you would use them live, in a studio, etc. -- the differences are practically nil..... Even factoring in the FC-200, which is expensive and quirky, the value proposition just isn't there....
Maybe Boss is banking on the software to be the key differentiator, however, I have very low expectations for that software. And there's no guarantee it'll always be limited to the Pro.....
Despite it sounding like I've already ditched the Pro, I haven't. Sometimes, it takes me a week or two to let go of something.....
aerial7
04-05-2005, 09:55 PM
So, just today Boss releases the manual.
And a quick surf thru it suggests there's nothing 1.8x better about the Pro.
Worse, it's occurred to me that it's easier / cheaper to stay current by going with the floormount, since Boss releases new models regularly -- not so with the rackmounts.
Sheesh -- this is like dumping a pretty girl..... 8O She may have the rack(mount), but the other one will do it on the floor!
aerial7
04-07-2005, 12:09 PM
rcknrllmn,
Thanks for talking me down off the ledge -- since you and I seem to have similar preferences, your GT-5 experience was particularly persuasive.
With that insight and a couple of nights with the Pro manual, I've made my decision. I'm sticking with the Pro. As I wrote elsewhere, the digital audio in/out was the deciding feature for me; however, I still submit the cost differential vs. the 8's functional overlap doesn't make the Pro very attractive for most people....
rcknrllmn
04-07-2005, 06:15 PM
I agree that the value & price hike for the GT-Pro doesn't seem justified, but I have it my mind that the GT-Pro is what I want. I really like a rack unit over a floor unit. I really find it a hassle to bend over all the time to make edits, especially on the fly, and I don't want to have to put it up on my desk either.
I hope I like the USB capabilities enough that I feel the extra money was worth it.

hope I like the USB capabilities enough that I feel the extra money was worth it.
It would be funny to see the GT-PRO uses USB1 instead of 2, a new professional unit uses old technology  . The manual doesn't really specify it clearly... I hope it's not USB1(not for this price)!!
by the way, Im new here. Hi aLL! :x
aerial7
04-08-2005, 06:06 AM
Heck, it should have firewire!
You do raise a good point, though: assuming it's not USB 2.0, are they able to shuffle a full 44.1 kHz signal back and forth when "Applying Effects to a Computer's Audio Playback" (right-hand col, p. 90)?
Oh, check it -- the manual answers this question (p. 110 for Win, p.126 for Mac):
You can use the native driver included on the GT-PRO Driver CD-ROM to record, play, and edit audio with high quality and stable timing. In Special driver mode, audio signals are transferred between the GT-PRO and the computer at a bit depth of 24 bits and a sample rate of 44.1 kHz.
It also claims 16 bit / 44.1 kHz for "Standard driver mode", which I think means using native OS drivers.....

8-Ball,
This may be considerably more difficult than it seems: The Pro's manual talks about using the "special driver mode" -- i.e., their custom drivers -- with the Editor/Librarian, and as a result, only over USB. This suggests the Editor/Librarian may be using a proprietary protocol to talk to the Pro, or that the protocol might be obfuscated/encrypted.
I have NO idea what I'm talking about, just going by what's on p. 110 of the Pro's manual....
Personally, I won't be surprised if the software's not even worth making work with the -8.....
Of course, if you could get at the MIDI stream between the software and the device, you could VERY easily make the stuff work with the -8 -- perhaps Boss anticipated that.
aerial7
04-29-2005, 07:53 AM
zzounds.com is saying the same thing: 4/29.
Well, today's 4/29, and they've changed their site: they're now saying "expected soon".
I've asked riksmusic for an update, but I don't expect any real response. I guess the best we can go on is the supposed 4/27 ship date somebody mentioned above, and figure 2-3 weeks (or more?) after that....

See, that's the source of my frustration: Are we day-to-day now, or still month-to-month? Have they started production, or are they still in-development? Or is it the software? Did the retailers set our expectations by taking pre-orders too soon, or were they genuinely told to expect them late-March?
All we know is the manual's "done". And that supposedly 4/27 was a significant date.
micHmo
05-01-2005, 02:05 PM
Well.. at least a few store in Japan has started to sell them according to this Japanese site
http://www.digimart.net/pub_gk_list.do;jsessionid=CE72F5CC69E52D85864716D8 0C30B779.dgm02?page=1&optKeep=1
3 stores are taking online orders (not pre-order) and limited to 1 order of pro per customer. 1 store indicates that they have a very limited amount in stock.
so I guess that means Boss has started the production and now its all depending on how many they have made and shipped. I have high hopes that "some" of us will receive it within next week, unless Boss is treating us north americans differently like they did with GT-8 (3-4 month behind Japan..)
ElGringo
05-01-2005, 02:45 PM
Well, hopefully they won't take 3-4 months! With the GT-8 they didn't announce it officially in the US till 3-4 months after Japan, but with the Pro they announced it at the same time as the GT-8. Relax, everybody. Some of us pre-ordered 3 months ago.
We've all decided to spend twice what an -8 costs to get USB MIDI / USB digital audio and XLR ports, and the Pro designation.
You can't rush these things, and at least it seems clear now they're in production and the first batch has been shipped.
So, rearrange your studio. Read the manual again. Go study Perdi's excellent intro post over in the -8 forum. Allocate space in your rack, and figure out how to cable the Pro into your patchbay. Make sure you've got the cables you'll need for it.
Meanwhile, figure out how it'll be shipped to your door. Bookmark the tracking site, make sure you can reach it from home, from work, from the car. Order several things -- books, strings, whatever -- to be shipped the same way, so you can figure out what time of day the shipper might stop at your house with the Pro. When your practice shipments arrive, drill yourself to see just how quickly you can open the contents and get it into your studio: time will be critical when it's for real and the box contains your Pro.
See, so many ways to fill these few remaining weeks (in fact, I blew 20 minutes on this post!), so find your own ways to pass the time. Because that's all we can do.

Going off-topic, but in the interest of passing time, I thought I'd ask....
I have a '92 Std American Strat and an 88(?) Squier Strat. Guess which is my fave? The Squier!!! Someday I'll post a pic, but it's a slightly unusual guitar that looks like it was made by Ibanez for Fender. An amazing neck on it, too.
Anyway, it's got hum-sing-hums on it -- the stock ones which are who-knows-what. However, I can get by on them. I have _never_ gotten a tone I like for very long outta the stock p'ups on the Std Am Strat.
So, what would you do? Focus on upgrading the main guitar (the Squier) to make it even better, or upgrade the Am Strat to try to get more use out of it?
(I don't intend on doing anything for a few months until after I see how they each work out with the Pro.....)

Another way to pass the time: Think about how to set up your FC-200.
Compare the table on p.85 with the "Manual Mode" table on p.104 -- the latter seems to give the default config for the FC-200. Generally, these defaults are quite good, but I'll be tweaking it. For example, I'll want a pedal for LOOP, and I don't need one for EQ (defaults to Pedal 7).
[And with this post, I made the rank of "Jam Master"!!]

Actually, I'm sorta enjoying the wait: It's given me time to get acquainted with my tech21 Tri-AC pre-amp pedal and PE60. The pre-amp pedal was a bit of an impulse buy, but I really like it. I'm quite curious to see how much I use it with the Pro.....
Next, I plan on working on my installation instructions: I've got the hardware side ready, so it's just a matter of plugging everything in, but I'm not sure about the out-of-the-box config. Clearly, setting up the Output Selects, and then configuring my -200 pedal assigns for manual mode. Oh, and a quick pass thru Perdi's notes over in the -8 forum.
And then, I rock (as best I can)!

Here's the latest response from Musiciansbuy.com (where I pre-ordered the GT-Pro)...
THESE ARE DUE AT THE END OF MAY..
Hope so.. end of May is better than June 20th.. but so was the 2nd Week of April that Boss "assured" them it would be availbe at...

can the preamp/amp modeling part of the effects blcok on the gt pro be turned off or bypassed completely? i want to use it simply as an effects unit with just the occasional preamp use, as i really like the sound of my amp setup the way it is. i was looking into the line 6 xt pro but heard that the amp simulation is always on, i guess that you have to always have one chosen. not sure if this is true, but its causing me to look around a bit and find out how other units compare. anyone know?

@ Jobester,
the GT-Pro can be used for effects only, but I read that L6 has an update out for the XTs that lets you bypass the preamp section. Still the effects in the GT-Pro will be more tweakable and you will have more realtime control over them. You can download the GT-Pros manual at www.roland.com somewhere.

Jobester's question reminds me of something I was going to point out: Beyond connectivity differences, and the corresponding changes to the internals, the Pro is no different from the 8. Answers to questions like Jobester's will be easier to find over in the 8 forum, either thru a search, or by asking the much larger audience that forum has.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with the question being asked here -- it's just I know where I'd go first for those kinds questions....

Hello Gang,
The more time that I spend waiting, the harder I find to justify buying the Pro over the 8. I finally went to Guitar Center and tried the GT-8 and I thought it was great. Then I started asking myself if the rack mount was worth double the money. I know we have discussed this as well but can someone explain to me again why we are waiting??? I just don't see enough differences to justify the wait and the money. I like the software but I may give in and get the 8. It does sound great.

All you need to do is compare the backs of the units. Pro has XLR sub-out, with separate Output Select for that, and USB, for both MIDI and digital audio input/output. Plus dual fx loops, which may be used in stereo.
After that, it's form-factor. I can't stand the floormounts, and I've got an FC-200 foot controller.
You've no doubt read the part where I almost ditched the Pro for the 8: the deal-breaker is the digital audio input/output over USB.
So, is it worth double the price of an -8? It apparently is to me, but it's still a dubious value proposition.
One huge advantage the 8 has over the Pro is the frequency with which new floormount models come out.

Finally hit musiciansfriend.com, with a due date of 06-10-2005. I don't have any info, but I think this suggests we'll start seeing Pros shipped to us pre-order dudes perhaps next week.....
I do think they got carried away with their description:
a trio of stereo effects loops

Jobester,
just look here:
http://line6.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=013126
Under Software on the L& page there's a Flash Memory Update 2.14. The description says: "Provides support for Amp Defeat toggle as well as implementing the Tone Correction functionality and new Live mode Cab Models provided in PODxt Live. Provides notification to Line 6 Edit version 2.1 when a Save operation has been initiated on the PODxt Pro itself."

I don't believe it: They're supposedly already shipping in Japan, supposedly en route to the US, and everything seems to be converging on June 10th or so.
I could go on for all the other reasons I don't believe it, but all that matters is this: The only way for me to know when it's shipping is when I get a tracking number.

Geez, I hope that isn't true. I'm going to call Boss and Roland tomorrow to find out. I'm getting pretty impatient waiting for this preamp. I already bought and returned the Pod Pro XT. That has the biggest hype ever for a modeling preamp. Line 6 is so thin sounding, you can move the bass up and down and you can hardly hear a difference.
I just sold my GSP 2101 LE, which was probably the dumbest thing I've ever done. If this GT-Pro doesn't come through soon, I might just have to find another one on ebay.

Yeah, me too: I pre-ordered nearly four months ago. Problem is, I ain't bailing now -- I've practically rebuilt my entire studio around that empty 2U space in my rack.
I've asked my supplier for an update; I'll get some sorta response tomorrow. It may be blind faith, but I still believe some of us are gonna start getting ship notifications by the end of the month.....

I know what you mean. That empty space has sort of stopped my playing. It looks ridiculous, I have my ME-30 laying on top of my power amp in my rack. That is the only thing that I'm using right now. It's funny, my Boss ME-30 sounds better than the Line 6 through my setup. That's why I know the GT-Pro is going to kick some serious ass.

What the heck? musiciansfriend.com had it at June 10th, then briefly changed it to 2-4 weeks, and now it's back to June 10th.
My supplier says they're still being told end of month. The fact they don't seem to have been given a date or tracking number or something more specific worries me, because isn't this the mode we've been in for awhile now? I.e., Late March, Late April, end of May -- what's the diff?
The only thing that suggests we're close is the fact that two different retailers have a very specific date -- June 10th.
Oh well, back to not caring. I wonder which will arrive first: summer, or my GT Pro?
ASHJN

The wait is almost over: Just heard from my supplier their shipment will be en route early next week (Tuesday, after the holiday, perhaps)!

What a relief -- no more speculation, no more wondering -- none of that stuff!

I have guarded optimism now! After the great news posted by baranger1, I decided I didn't want to wait on an email response from my supplier and called them. The guy that answered said he'd check and call me right back.
He called me back and said they have one being shipped and since I was first on the pre-order list, I would be getting it sent out to me as soon as they get it.
GREAT!!! But there is more... I then got a call about an hour later from someone else at my supplier saying that Roland just sent out an email that delivieries for the GT-pro had been pushed back to the end of June due to the amount of preorders to be filled. I told her that I just got off the phone with someone else form their store (teach me to not write down a name!!) saying I would be getting mine in a week.
I am hoping the original research is true and I am able to get mine within the week!!

Okay, so is anyone else freakin' out now that their Pro is about to arrive?!
I'm totally ready to drop the unit into the rack and cable it up, but I'm semi-stressin' over how to put it to use a.s.a.p. I mean, all that levels stuff I never learned with the GX-700. And it's one thing to understand how to tweak it -- the user interface makes that pretty easy -- but it's another thing entirely to know that you're doing it "right", and that your patches will hold up over time.
Oh well, I guess it goes with the territory. First session will be spent surfing the presets, highlighting the ones I like in my printed copy of the manual. Second I'll probly just focus on the preamps, trying to see which ones suit me the best; meanwhile, I'll be devouring the GT-X manual as well as some of Perdi's posts over in the -8 forum.... Also, I may just go with the "System Preamp" initially -- one global pre -- as described on p.98.
Oh, and I think I'll start tonight with a re-read of the manual, putting post-its on the pages to mark things I'll want to tweak right away (fc-200 config, Output Select choices, etc.).
