We have a TECH TALK forum for this.

They balance/buffer your signal. Here is a quite good description:

Have you been told you need one? I find it curious to ask for a good brand of something that you don't know what it does.

I havent' been told I need one. I just want some information on what it does so I can decide if I need one or not. If I think I do need one, I'd like to buy a quality one and not junk.

Ikonoklast, thanks for the link...I should've just googled it my self.

Can you use a DI box with an amp? From what I've read, its primarily used for mixing consoles. Will it reduse some hum that I get coming through my amp?

D.Is are usually supplied by the production company when you do a gig.

Generally cheap ones aren't very good, they can be noisy.

You'll only need a D.I if your GT is being run direct to the board and if the board is a long way away. A D.I box helps maintain a healthy signal.
