View Full Version : is it worth it?

I've had my gt-8 for about a year now, and i love the dang thing. I've heard some bad things about the gt-10 like color (looks alittle bit like a digitech IMHO), the wah being part of the FX instead of an independant effect. But I've also heard alot of good about. Now my question is in your personal opinon is the move from the GT-8 to GT-10 worth it. That question can be answered in the poll. My question is, would it be worth it for me? I mostly use late 70's to early style metal patches (Neo-classical, British metal, Thrash metal, some hair metal, progressive metal), and and of course classic rock (hense the name :D) patches. The most important improvement for me would be the amp sims and distortions. How drastic is it? Enought to buy a gt-10? How much have you guys gotten in exchanging/selling your gt-8 on your quest for a gt-10 lol.

The GT-10 is definitely an improvement over the GT-8. It doesn't blow the GT-8 out of the water. The GT-8 is too solid an MFX for that. Whether it is worth it for you to upgrade depends on you. What are you using it for? Are any of the upgrades must have items? Looper? USB? Bigger display screen?

For me it is totally worth the upgrade. The additional CTL pedal means i can get by taking just the GT10 when i fly without additional Sub Pedals etc!
Just for the record, Wah is still independent to the FX blocks. It is in the MASTER menu and there is now also a Pedal Bend that is independent so you can use it in conjunction with 2 FX Blocks which is super cool.
You can not only route FX in parallel now, you can also use 2 instances of any effect for example, i have created a really cool 5 part harmony patch by using 2 Harmonists. Sounds amazing! It'll be featured in the upcoming DVD.
It wouldn't bother me what colour it is but as it happens, i think it is very cool, i love it, and i certainly don't link it to Digitech in anyway, not that it would matter....
On the surface, it probably doesn't seem like a huge leap forward from the GT8 but once you dig in......All in all, the GT10 has been a vast inprovement for me.

I think that a more telling and interesting question would be :
"Has anyone bought the Gt-10 and then returned it, deciding to just stick with their 8?"
Can't say for sure but I think it would be a pretty short list :)
Agree with Slick. That's a better test.
The bells and whistles may tempt GT-8 owners, but I should imagine it's the sound of the elements that the individual uses that's the main thing. That's what I do with other equipment.
Overall, it seems the improvement is worth it. It's not a step backwards or a giant leap forward. Distortions sound like Boss distortions so it's whether you like that already. Apparently, they are more defined, but definitely Boss.
It would be interesting to see how many have left the Boss fold, but have now returned or are planning on it.

hey that would be cool! is the harmonist tone better in the GT10 - in the 8 i always get a harmonised note that sounds pretty fake.

It was worth it for me, I loved my GT-8 and the 10 is a nice step up. I could still use the GT-8 and be happy though :) .

Well to start.. what someone calls minor may be major and vice versa.. If you had an in-between minor improvement and blow it out of the water.. Well that's where my vote would have been.. but... for the rest. these are subjective but major to me in no particular order. ( Just compared to the gt 8)
1. Display mode.. ( if you haven't caught on to that button you should!! )
2. Graphic EQ... I'm a visual guy so a visual graph of what I'm doing means much more to me than up and down numbers.
3. A lot less Fizz... I'm not a high gain guy but the 8 seemed to have it on low gain stuff too... You could eq it out but you had to learn first... Not so with the gt10
4. USB... Aaahhh... bliss to me.. Saved me around 70 bucks Canadian.. and it's not a dedicated usb cable like you see on Sony... or Ipod stuff... It's actually a normal usb cable... Yeah !!!...
5. NO CLIPPING...... A lot of gt 8 users experienced this... ( some didn't I did!)
6. The wet blanket over the amp is now a wet kleenex..
7. The Wah's sound better
8. The Tuner is nice and bright for stage use !! Very Readable Display !
Wow... I think I just did a mini Review:icon_tongue:

much easer to tote around than my pedal board "12/ 13 pedals" and i get a much clearer sound with the gt 10 as my preamp. The fx in the gt 10 blows my pedals away. Better than the GT 8? i think so.
its worth every penny.

You can not only route FX in parallel now...
Hey guys,
What are the benefits of routing effects in parallel? What does it mean?
I don't understand what this means and how different it is to the gt8's effects routing.
Thanks,
Dan

What does it mean?
It means that you can have completely different effect routes. Like having a clean, acoustic sound together with a crunchy Marshall stack for rhythm, so that only the acoustic sound will have delay on it, etcetera... (ooh... that was almost possible with the 8; lemme say chorus instead, so you get a better picture)
It opens up a lot of new possibilities that were unavailable with previous pedals, and if I'm right, the GT10 can do a few routing tricks that even a PodX3 can't. Add a whooshing phaser onto the reverb only; have a crybaby on the left and a vox wah on the right; record a long rhythm to accompany yourself, and transpose it with the whammy pedal whenever you feel like it...
If something cannot be done with the GT-10, it would probably sound f%ck*ng stupid anyway.
My opinion on the 10? It's a pedal based MFX that offers more fun then anything else in a single package.

Well, I wouldn't be too quick on opinions like that. People do use complex setups and parallel routings are great and sometimes sound better for certain effect configurations.

I upgraded to the GT-10 from a GT-6 and the 10 is far superior tone-wise in my rig. But one of the features that sold me on the 10 is the USB interface.

Wanted a set up for recording. Was going to get GT-10 but when they offered me GT-8 for $264 I took it. Sounds really nice going into my all tube Peavey Classic 30.
When i record I goint a M-Audio Fast Track USB setup
GT-10 did sound nice though.

And that too is a great point.. .although some stores are still selling the gt-8 for 450 or so... you can get one for around 250-300 now... So now the question becomes is it worth the difference in price from 250 to 500 or the lucky ones who got th gt 10 for 429... I sold my gt 8 for 400.00 so to me it was worth it..

Nice. I've been reading this forum for about 5 months. I've found the opinions and statements here to be very usefull and thought provoking. I don't have the internet at home and there must have been something at work that was keeping me from posting on here, but today it let me log in. I am glad to be here.
I must have bought my GT-8 about a year and a half ago. I have really enjoyed it and it opened up lots of areas that my former set ups weren't capable of doing. I bought my GT-10 about a month ago. The major reasons for the upgrade were the superior overall tone and the increased assignability. I found the GT-8 to be somewhat frustrating in trying to acheive certain tones. Although the GT-10's looper is somewhat fun, it's more of a toy caparable to, yet less functional, the Line 6 DL4. I own the Boss RC-50 which pretty much does what I would want a looper to do. I've never tried the RC-2 or RC-20's. I wouldn't suggest that someone buy the GT-10 for the fact it has a looper. My computer at home has Windows 2000 so I haven't made use of the USB. Still over all I find the GT-10 to be a nice upgrade from the 8.
