View Full Version : Noise (hiss) level in 4CM - GT-8 vs. GT-Pro

Hi all, this is my first post here.

I've done a search, but I've not seemed to find an answer to this:

In 4CM mode (actually 5CM since I'm using a Triaxis in stereo) with my GT-8 there's a terrible hiss on the high gain settings. Even if I initialize a patch with no effects and only plug the "loop out" from the GT-8 into the "instr in" of my Triaxis, the hiss is still there. I've owned the GT-8 for about six months now and no amount of twiddling/level matching/etc... will get rid of it and the noise suppressor is not an option. I also have all effects in proper order. I have the GT-8 sitting on my rack with high quality, short, balanced cables.

I know if I get rid of the GT-8 for something like a G-Major or Xpression I'll miss having a modeller around in addition to the "out front" effects, but seeing the GT-8 sitting up on my rack, using it just for time-based effects is, quite frankly, making me mad.

I bought the GT-8 to replace a bunch of stomp boxes after reading the 4CM posts on this board, but so far it's unusable to me.

I guess all I really want to know is if the GT-Pro has that hiss when in 4(5) CM mode?

man i don't know how to help you :?

all i can tell you is that with GT-pro you would probably have same problems.
Try posting this question in GT-8 section, there are more people an some surely can hel you.

good luck

Thanks sith, but I'm trying to avoid "probably" :D

I don't think it's a problem that can be rectified with trying different settings. I'm just to the point of wondering whether the GT-Pro is any better.

they are practicly the same units, GT-PRO has more outputs and assigns,....

Do you have the Output Select set to the correct setting for the type of amp you
are using? Make sure it is not on LINE/PHONES if you're using an amp. Choose
the amp setting that most closely reflects the type of amp you are using, and wether
you're using it direct jacked, or via send/return loop on the amp.

There are about 300 million ways to hook up a GT-Pro or GT-8 and configure it,
and from perusing the forums here I have found that many people nail their sound
perfect with it and are very impressed with the sound quality, while others report
tinny sound problems, and others report bassy problems.

While learning to use my GT-Pro, I stumbled upon both tinny and bassy sounding
configuration depending on how I configured the unit. After reading the manual
from cover to cover a few times, and reading some of the guides in the download
section here on GT Central, as well as reading numerous postings in all of the
GT-Pro and GT-8 forums, I've been able to quite trivially set up my GT-Pro to
give me the right sound both through my studio monitors, and through my guitar
amp (Laney Linebacker 100 Reverb stack).

Make sure you aren't using the speaker sim if connected to an amp.

Thanks for both your answers.

So forget my GT-8.

You're both saying you own a GT-Pro and using 4CM, you have no hiss with high gain settings using your amps natural overdrive and not the GT-Pro's?

If I do that, there is no perceivable difference in noise level from jacking straight into
my amp without the GT-Pro present.

IOW, the GT-Pro, with no effects enabled (freshly initialized patch) adds no noticeable
noise to the signal.

Could be a problem with your amp perhaps?

Nothing wrong with my Triaxis.

I think where there's a $250-450 difference in the two is in stuff like the loop. If Boss didn't cut corners in the programming (which they didn't, of course), they had to cut it elsewhere, I imagine.

Any other way I run it - though my amp's loop only, or into the front only sounds great. Just 4CM with their loop out into my instrument in.

I'd have to hear one first with my amp before I bought one.

Thanks, though.
