View Full Version : Can the Pro or 8 switch an amp channel?

There are a few procesors that can switch an amp channel via 1/4" jack. I know for sure the TC Electronic Gmajor does this. Rocktron Replifex I think does too, along with a few others I can't recall.

So can the Pro or 8 do this? I'm wanting to run the 4CM and have the Boss switch the channel of the 2 channel head.

Any input?

Yes, the 8 and the pro offer amp control.... as long as it is 1/4" jack for a 2 channel amp and not the midi style connector you get on some 3 channel amps (like mesa's).

The GT8 has (1) channel switching jack and the GT Pro has (2).

I'm thinking of using a relay (with high quality contacts) to build a bypass for the HC (It's currently flying to Barcelona :D ).

Does somebody know the max voltage and current of the GT-Pro amp control? :?:

So with the 4CM how would this work on an 8 or Pro? I'm seriously baffled!! Any help would be highly appreciated.

with the 4CM, your amp's preamp section is in the loop of the 8/pro - so you either enable the amp preamp or one of the 8/pro preamps in each patch you create...

As part of your patch you would assign the 8 to switch amp channels, either using the CTL pedal or some other triggering method (there are many!!!) that way you have the option to use either (or both) of the dual COSM preamps, or either of your amps Pre- amp channels - enough choices to baffle the best of us

Technically, you need 5 cables to use amp channel switching in that case. You need an additional cable to connect the Amp Control jack on the GT-8/Pro to the channel switching jack on your amp. The Amp Control on the GT-8/Pro is just a 1/4" TS shorting jack, when the Amp Control LED is Off, the connection is shorted, when the LED is On the connection is open. If this matches your amp's requirements, you're good to go. Some amp switching connections use a TRS (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) connection to control either multiple chanels or another amp effect such as reverb. If the channel switch function uses the Tip/Sleeve connection any standard 1/4" cable will work. If the amp uses the Ring/Sleeve connection for channel switching you'll have to 'improvise', either creating your own cable or using a TRS to 2 TS cable, inserting the correct 1/4" TS jack into the GT-8/Pro.

So I will actually be running the new 5CM. Sounds like a great new thread eh?

I actually own a GT6 right now, and there is NO Amp Control input option, so I probably would have not asked this question had I owned a Pro or 8.

Thanks guys for the help!!!!! I need to buy a Pro or GT8 soon. Need to let the hurt set in on my new Soldano purchase first, then apply more financial pain with a GT Pro.

Cheers!!

Actually, I run a wireless too. That would mean 6 audio cables running back to my amp, PLUS power (four for the 4CM, one for wireless, one for amp control)

Nope. This just settled the 8 vs. Pro debate for me. GT Pro all the way.

I think the gt-8 only has 1 amp switch button... ?

My only complaint is that they should have used stereo jacks so that one of the sides (tip or ring) is shorted to ground in ON position, and the other one in OFF. Kind of like a SPDT switch.

It shouldn't. In the 'standard' 4CM, only three of the cables actually connect to your amp, the fourth is the guitar to GT-8/Pro input. The connection from the wireless receiver connects to the GT-8/Pro input and with the addition of the Amp Control cable you now have four connections to your amp (input, loop send, loop receive and channel switch) - for a total of 5 cables.

You're right. So 5CM it is plus power to the 8. I actually just bought a Pro today from Swetwater after they lowerd thier price to $699 delivered.

Thanks guys!!
