View Full Version : Does anyone really use the 2 amp thing on Pro or 8?

I have a GT6 and it seems the "big fuss" is the 2 amps at once. Other than obvious hardware features, there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference. Is that dual amp thing netting any success out there?

I use it on some patches, it is a pretty interesting feature. Some sounds that are not available out of a single amp you can get out of combining two amps

I'm leaning towards getting a GT Pro (I've already got a GT8) so
I can get a stereo FX loop to use with the Dual Stereo Preamps. You can get some pretty amazing tones by mixing 2 different amps, each witth different cabs, different mics and different mic positions.

I'm running a Roland GR-20 in the loops in stereo, and let me tell you, those stereo strings with 2 amps sounds amazing. Its like night and day between that and mono

I want the stereo loops so I can run the Dual L/R Preamps with dual Harmonic Convergers and an ADA MicroCab (I still like some of the ADA cab sims).
I use it for several things:
A clean channel and distorted channel in the same patch, or two diff. sounding preamps, without having to duplicate all the other fx, assigns, etc. into another patch.
Mixing 2 amps together (either stereo or mono) you can get pretty much any wacko sound you can imagine. The only thing with stereo (dual L/R setting) is that if you put certain effects after the preamp (like phaser) it mixes them down to mono. There's also a "channel delay" setting that makes amp B's output delayed 0 to 50 milliseconds from amp A.
I haven't messed around with "picking dynamics" a whole lot yet, because my picking is usually quite uniform and consistent - at least i try to keep it so. Might be able to do some crazy sounds by putting effects like tremolo or sub-delay before preamp =)
Of course, another huge advantage is that the compressor/limiter has its own block, like on the old gt-3 (i often use compressor+several fx on clean sounds) and also that most fx1/fx2 effects can be used in both fx blocks. You can even assign the same one to both, each with different settings.
Anyway, i liked the sound of the gt-6, but a few limitations - especially no compressor/limiter block - made me stick to my good old '3' until the gt-pro/gt-8 came out.

Since upgrading from 6 to 8, I'm slightly more impressed with the 8 (you'd hope!)...I mean...it's black, right? ;-)
The dual amp feature is very useable. As 'delt' said, I haven't found much scope for 'picking dynamics' yet...but I can see lots of potential should I bother. There are a few other conveniences that I don't remember on the GT6...general flexibility stuff, etc.
One gripe: I've never been totally happy with the GT8 'Slow Gear' effect...I sure I recall the GT6 version being more consistent(?)
^ i love that "spam poison" link in your sig.... nice tool for a fellow SPAMCRUSHER like myself http://deimos.ca/smilies/misc/grin.gif
A few years ago i was running a similar site + mail server that directed everything it got as spam complaints to the originating ISP's. this one's even better!!

Nice work, delt. I'm just doing my bit for the cause ;-)
I guess 'they' will get wise to it sooner or later(?)
Spammers should be EXECUTED. Those who should get wise, are:
1. idiots who are supposed to pass laws against fraud
2. the 0.01% of e-mail user MORONS that actually buy stuff from spammers
As long as the conditions make it favorable, inexpensive, and LUCRATIVE to setup a spamming rig, things will never get better. In 2001, 5% of all e-mail was spam. At the beginning of 2005, over 80% of all e-mail was spam, and 200 individuals/organizations were responsible for about 90% of all junk mail world wide. Haven't kept up with the current stats....
I would say that I use it on 80% of my patches. After switching from the 6 to the '8 I try to make one patch per song.

I use it to seamlessly fade forth and back between a dry distorted metal guitar sound to a sparkling clean guitar sound with some reverb and chorus, all with one expression pedal on the FCB1010.
