View Full Version : Good GT tones start at the mains

I am looking ONLY for a live tone, not recording. I have recently realized that the only thing that matters is what comes out the mains. That's all anyone hears. So if this sound is dialed, you're golden. I have ditched the theory of getting your rig sounding awesome THEN trying to reproduce that through the PA. I am convinced I need to now START at the PA with my GT Pro sound, then let the cards fall where they may through my personal monitor/cab on stage. Agree?
I currently have a PODxt Pro AND a GT6. I would like to just own a GT Pro but have a few concerns I was hoping you all may be able to help me resolve. Main reason I have the PODxt still is the distortion high gain kills the GT imo. But I really want to convert over to the GT Pro as my only rig. I have yet to find a distortion that I love. But that doesn't mean it's not in this rabbit hole of a processor. Any cool patches out there?
I have my GT6 currently hooked up to our huge PA at my house. The PODxt is hooked up to some 4X12 cabs, then the direct out goes to the PA. Right now the PODxt distortion wins, but the GT6 cleans blow the POD out of the water. I like the GT's power and layout though, and want to convert soley to the GT Pro. I need a mean clean beefy distortion from the GT to ditch the POD. Any help?

That's the way i always thought about it. I'm more of a studio guitarist, and i've always setup my rig so that i hear the sound exactly the way it will sound on CD once it's recorded and mixed.
Most guitarists give themselves a shitload of trouble that gives absolutely no advantage in the end result, just as you described.

Yes, I agree. I started this method @2000 with my GX-700's. I used 2, one to the board with cab sims on & one to my stage amps with cab sims off. Luckily I own the PA my band uses. I dialed in my sounds through the PA 1st & then compensated for my stage sound after that. Not everyone has that luxery, but I personally think it's the way to go. I haven't gigged with the PRO yet but I plan on doing the same thing, except I will use a full range cab/power amp for stage monitoring instead of my Rivera & guitar cabs.

So are you buying two Pro's or can one Pro divide this up (ie. Left out is cab sims, Right out is cab sims off)? Or are you getting two GT Pro's.
I really like this idea and think it is an awesome solution. Reason is......the sound you dial in for your mains sounds all good for the crowd and overall mix, but to me it sounds like you are listening to a CD or something. Throough a monitor it just looses that "in your face" 4X12 cab sound, and sounds more like a CD. That's great for the crowd, sucks for the guitar player trying to "feel" thier way through a song.
Anyhoo, awesome idea. Anyone else?

Instead of left and right you can do sub out and main outs

You mind elaborating? I'm a little clueless what sub out is. Is it like another out that is the same thing as the main L/R out? Same function?
So in a nut shell..............you can send your L/R Main Outs signal to the mixing board for PA, then send a Sub Out to your personal amp/cab on stage, THEN change the sounds of the SubOut to your liking for the amp/cab mix? This is hard to believe, but I know the GT Pro is about as deep as a shuttle handbook too, so it won't suprise me.

Basically yes. The GT-Pro has 2 sets of outputs, the Main and Sub Outs, both are stereo. Each has their own controls for levels, cabinet models, overall eq, etc. You can find out more fine details in the manual off of Roland's site. I would run the Main Outs into your amp and the Sub's into the PA, because the Sub's are selectable between 1/4" and XLR, where as the Mains are just 1/4"

Cool. I just need to buy one. I think I will this weekend. I'm sure you'll see me in another thread asking how to turn it on!! Thanks guys!!
